Update notes via Steam Community

Hey Ruins To Fortress players!

Ruins to Fortress is stepping up with its biggest update yet! After the successful Early Access release in December and months of technical fine-tuning, version 0.5.0 brings a massive overhaul to the core gameplay of this 2D survival title.

The update consists of multiple major expansions. With New Horizons, the game world has been reimagined: for the first time, players will explore procedurally generated maps, featuring a completely revamped biome system. Eight diverse biomes – from icy tundras to scorching deserts – introduce fresh challenges and strategic depth. Instead of one large island, players will now navigate multiple islands, and even the size of the map is customizable.

Looking to make your base feel more like home? The Homestead update adds 20 new decorative items, including functional clocks, atmospheric light sources like lava lamps and torches, houseplants, and even a working radio. Every base can now become a truly personal space.

On the gameplay side, version 0.5.0 introduces dangerous underground bunkers for daring players to explore. In addition, new destructible NPC bases offer fresh PvE opportunities and valuable loot. And to top it off, a wide range of quality-of-life improvements have been implemented – including a fully redesigned building system with snap-to-grid functionality, visible snap points, a reworked clan manager, and a handy minimap.

Note: Save games from the old static map version are not compatible with the new version, and vice versa.

Map System

  • Seed-based worlds: every game generates a unique map unless you enter a custom seed

  • Manually choose seed and map size

  • More detailed map options unlock after testing

Biomes

Tundra · Steppe · Forest · Meadows · Rocklands · City · Savanna · Desert

New Features and Improvements

  • New tree types

  • New monument: Underground bunker

  • Destructible NPC bases you can loot

  • Grenades are now bouncier

  • Player drones and boats now consume fuel

  • Drones can move up and down using the jump key (Space)

  • Minimap shows other clan members, your bed, last death, biomes, and monuments; areas unlock as you explore

  • Torchlight and headlamps now shine higher and lower vertically, making it easier to spot boats in the water

  • Day/Night Cycle: Night time is now 4x faster than daytime

  • Rain now has a minimum cooldown of 30 minutes before it can appear again

  • If a player gets stuck for example between a npc or player base, the game will try to spawn an "emergency boat" nearby after a couple of minutes

  • The nuke explosion will only affect 30% of the area within its blast radius. Player bases and clan bases are protected and won't be destroyed

  • Improved sorting for craftable items and buildings, now color-coded to highlight commonly used items

  • Item and building damage is now more clearly visible with HP values and percentage left, so it’s easier to see what you’re damaging during a raid or if your attacks are even making a difference.

Building System

  • Simplified build zone: place a workbench to project a visible blueprint area

  • Zone grows larger with each workbench upgrade

  • Background tiles and electricity work inside your build zone

  • Snap-to-grid for parts and items (hold Shift for exact alignment)

  • Visible snap points guide precise construction
