I've been working on some Bananarang related stuff recently. Part of what I've been working on is a pretty large update to the game!
Fully implemented controller support!
Controllers are now more properly supported. You can use the analog stick to move and all on-screen indicators in the game will now reflect controller buttons if a controller is connected.
XBOX controllers should work, as should some wireless Nintendo Switch controllers. The controller I used is a generic third party Nintendo Switch compatible controller. Just plug them into your computer with USB! I haven't tested Bluetooth controllers as my computer does not have Bluetooth, but wired will work for sure,
If the controller is working properly, you should be able to jump using the right-most face button and throw the boomerang using the top-most or bottom-most face buttons. Movement is also possible with either the stick or the directional pad.
I find playing this game with a controller, particularly an analog stick, is far easier and more comfortable!
Ready to rumble??
Rumble (controller vibrations) has been added to Bananarang: The Scattered Shards! When a controller with vibration compatibility is connected, you'll get controller feedback all throughout the game! I personally, manually hand-programmed vibrations co-responding to the on screen action into all the levels and bosses! Controller feedback adds a new layer of immersion into the game and I highly recommend trying out this feature.
Small gameplay improvements
Two bosses have been improved in minor ways.
First of all, the World 6 (The Kitchen) boss has been changed in the following way: the healthbar no longer resets when the player dies. This was done in response to feedback as well as internal testing that showed having to restart the boss pattern being as long as it is serves as enough of a punishment for dying, and before this change, this boss could be very time consuming.
Secondly, the World 8 (Pirate Penultimate) boss has been changed in the following way: in the Captain's phase, the (SPOILER FOR WORLD 8) snake arm works a bit differently, as the original pattern was too similar to the parrot pattern and they could be avoided in the same way. The new pattern is still very similar but will keep players a bit quicker on their feet!
Lastly, the boomerang airtime has been increased from 2 seconds to 2.5 seconds. This increased window of time makes it far easier to slam something with the boomerang 5 times as is the way of damaging many bosses in the game.
These changes seem small but I promise, they go a long way to fine-tuning the game and making it an overall improved experience.
Additional content related to 'Super Boss Rush' mode
In the last update, a new mode called 'Super Boss Rush' mode was added to the game, serving as a challenging gauntlet for super players of the game! The reward for this mode is a secret room with fun facts and trivia about the game's development. Additional segments are in this room now including an extended recounting of the experience by my long-time beta tester, Colin Ellis, and some other changes were made.
Stay tuned for more Bananarang!
Trust me. More Bananarang is coming. ;)
