USS New Jersey (BB-62) is an Iowa-class battleship that had a storied career that spanned parts of 6 decades. Commissioned in 1943 during World War II, the New Jersey participated in numerous major campaigns in the Pacific Theater, including the Battle of Leyte Gulf and the Battle of Okinawa. Her formidable firepower and robust armor made her a formidable asset in naval engagements, and she provided crucial fire support to ground forces during amphibious assaults. After World War II, the New Jersey was decommissioned in 1948 but was reactivated and modernized in the 1950s to serve during the Korean War and later in the Vietnam War and Lebanese Civil War.
During the Vietnam War, the USS New Jersey served as a floating artillery platform off the coast of Vietnam. Her massive 16-inch guns were used to provide fire support for ground troops and bombard strategic targets inland.
After her service in Vietnam, the New Jersey was decommissioned for the second time in 1969. However, she was reactivated yet again in the 1980s during the Reagan administration as part of the 600-ship Navy program. She underwent extensive modernization and served during the Lebanese Civil War. The USS New Jersey was finally decommissioned for the last time in 1991 and eventually stricken from the register in 1999. She is currently undergoing repairs in Philadelphia before she returns back to her home in Camden, New Jersey where she serves as a museum ship.
